Did You Get Spooked (just A Little) At Fryfogel Tavern!

By DiscoverStratford.com - Published October 30, 2024

Hey there! Amanda, your host at Avery House B&B, just stumbled across something spooky - but in a fun way! Fryfogel Tavern & Arboretum brought back its annual Ghost Tours this week, and it was perfect for those of us who enjoy a bit of eerie history without needing to sleep with the lights on.

The tour is one that dives into the fascinating history of Fryfogel Tavern, which has been around since 1844 (yep, it's that old). Amanda couldn't resist going down the history rabbit hole, and here’s what she found out: The tavern was built by Swiss immigrant Sebastian Fryfogel and is the last remaining Canada Company tavern from the Huron Tract days. Now, it's owned by the Stratford Perth Heritage Foundation and sits on a beautiful 5-acre property. The community is working on restoring the area with a garden of native plants and trees that harken back to pre-settlement times - pretty cool, right? They're also in the process of restoring the tavern itself to turn it into a museum and community meeting spot. So, not only does it provide a light dose of Halloween spookiness, but you also step into a piece of local history that's still evolving today!

Sounds like it was the perfect combo of ghostly fun and rich history for a laid-back autumn afternoon.

Planning a trip to Stratford for the theatre, shopping, dining, and maybe a little ghost-hunting? You’ll need a cozy place to stay! Head over to DiscoverStratford.com (link in bio) for info on over 25 charming, owner-operated spots to choose from - like furnished apartments, lofts, and, of course, B&Bs.

Happy haunting (and happy booking)!
